23RD QUESTIONS

The Holy and Blessed Trinity is my shepherd.

  • what is it like to have no one as a guide in foreign places?
  • what is it like to traverse this world without one looking out for us?

I have no wants.

  • what is it like to have a need that cannot be met?
  • what is it like to be in need and find yourself alone?

G-D makes me to lay down in green pastures.

  • what is it like to have no times or places for rest?
  • what is it like to carry every burden, and more, on one's shoulders?

G-D guides me by the still waters.

  • what is it like to thirst, even beyond a physical need?
  • what is it like to know only tempest seas and swift rapids?

G-D restores my soul.

  • what is it like to be so exhausted that you prefer death to renewal?
  • what is it like to be so burned-out as to require respite care perpetually?

G-D leads me in paths of righteousness;
  • where would be trod if we have no inner compass or moral conscience?
  • what would our choices be if they had no bearing on peace or justice?

for G-D's name sake.

  • what is it like to have no one to live for, no one to worship, no one to count on?
  • what is it like to bear a name as if it is a curse because of how others use that name?

E'en though I walk through the valley of death

  • what is it like to be in complete and utter darkness without knowing what the next step will bring?
  • what is it like to suffer and be near death, or dying, and without any hope of something good to follow?

I will fear no evil

  • what is it like to fear evil, even unto the point of living as if evil is all that there is?
  • what is it like to be so mindful of evil that goodness missed time and again?

for You are with me.

  • what is it like to be totally alone, no one to share life with?
  • what is it like to be within a people, being part of a community, but being lonely nonetheless?

Your rod and your staff comfort me.

  • what is it like to live life without a protector?
  • what is it like to live in a world where instruments of violence and harm are used solely for harming and killing?

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.

  • what is it like to have meals only in the presence of danger?
  • what is it like to dine, not eat--but dine, when the world around us is in constant chaos?

You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows.

  • what is it like to have no one to celebrate your life's joys?
  • what is it like to have no one to mark and claim you as being a blessing?

Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all my days.

  • what is it like to be on the run from what follows you?
  • what is it like to not know compassion and loving-kindness?

And, I will dwell in the house of the Holy, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal One, forever.

  • what is it like to live homeless, to not have any shelter or protection from the elements?
  • what is it like to feel ultimately separated from G-D and those we love?
  • what is it like to be only a temporal, spatial, being?
