HILDEGARD: Prophet, Reformer, Feminine, Inclusive, Mystical, Green

Choir Of Angels

Some wonderful quotes by St. Hildegard of Bingen:
(1098 – 17 September 1179)

“I heard a voice speaking to me: ‘The young woman whom you see is Love. She has her tent in eternity… It was love which was the source of this creation in the beginning when God said: ‘Let it be!’ And it was. As though in the blinking of an eye, the whole creation was formed through love. The young woman is radiant in such a clear, lightning-like brilliance of countenance that you can’t fully look at her… She holds the sun and moon in her right hand and embraces them tenderly…The whole of creation calls this maiden ‘Lady.’ For it was from her that all of creation proceeded, since Love was the first. She made everything… Love was in eternity and brought forth, in the beginning of all holiness, all creatures without any admixture of evil. Adam and Eve as well were produced by love from the pure nature of the Earth.”Don't let yourself forget that God's grace rewards not only those who never slip, but also those who bend and fall. So sing! The song of rejoicing softens hard hearts. It makes tears of godly sorrow flow from them. Singing summons the Holy Spirit. Happy praises offered in simplicity and love lead the faithful to complete harmony, without discord. Don't stop singing."

"Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars."

"The mystery of God hugs you in its all-encompassing arms."

"We shall awaken from our dullness and rise vigorously toward justice. If we fall in love with creation deeper and deeper, we will respond to its endangerment with passion."

"Holy Spirit, the life that gives life: You are the cause of all movement. You are the breath of all creatures. You are the salve that purifies our souls. You are the ointment that heals our wounds. You are the fire that warms our hearts. You are the light that guides our feet. Let all the world praise you."

"Every creature is a glittering, glistening mirror of Divinity."

"Glance at the sun. See the moon and stars. Gaze at the beauty of the green earth. Now think."

"The truly holy person welcomes all that is earthly."

Collect for the Commemoration of Saint Hildegard of Bingen

Most glorious and holy God,
whose servant Hildegard, strong in the faith,
was caught up in the vision of your heavenly courts:
by the breath of your Spirit
open our eyes to glimpse your glory
and our lips to sing your praises
with all the angels;
through Christ our Redeemer,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Collect from St. Hildegard of Bingen

You, all-accomplishing Word of the [Holy One] are the light of primordial daybreak over the spheres. You, the foreknowing mind of divinity, foresaw all your works as you willed them, your prescience hidden in the heart of your power, your power like a wheel around the world, whose circling never began and never slides to an end. Blessed be God for ever!

Hymn by St. Hildegard of Bingen

Flourishing branch you bear rich fruit,
answer tradition's quest for truth.
new life that springs from ancient roots,
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Warmth of the sun distilled in you,
glows and makes fragrant blossoms new,
balsam and rose and dusky rue.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Skies drop their dew on rolling fields;
deep in your womb the dark earth yields;
sheltering nests their fledglings shield.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Fine is the flower that grows in you,
dryness is ended, earth made new.
God's creativity breaks through.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Your greening pow'r has borne rich fruit;
from a fine trunk new branches shoot;
firmly they stand on ancient roots.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Earth is rejoicing, now made new;
blossoming power is flowing through;
paradise visions come in view.
Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

and bring us at last to heaven with all your saints in light.

Every people and tribe oppressedby the greed and prejudice of others,we entrust to you, O God.

Prayers of St. Hildegard of Bingen

O eternal God, now let it please you to burn in that love so that we become those limbs which you made in that same love when you gave birth to your {Beloved One] in the first dawn before all creatures, and look on this need which falls upon us. Take it from us for the sake of your [Anointed] and lead us into the bliss of salvation. Amen.

Holy Spirit, making life alive, moving in all things, root of all created being, cleansing the cosmos of every impurity, effacing guilt, anointing wounds. You are lustrous and praiseworthy life. Waken and re-awaken everything that is. Amen.
