INCLUSION: LANGUAGE FOR INCLUSIVE LITURGY

My focus in writing has been to employ inclusive and/or expanded language. Such has been as issue for me since the 1970's, being blessed in life by a dear and wonderful sister-in-law who was and is very actively involved in feminist and womanist movements. While I do not expect everyone to share my passion for equality within the church, and within the worship and Scriptures of the church, it is something that is a burning flame within me to find language that might be used in traditional texts that would make such inclusive to all genders.

What you will find below is what I have come to at this point and I hope the way it is arranged (by heading) will be helpful in terms of where it might be substituted for the wording in traditional text to make them inclusive. The greatest challenge is when referring to the Trinity without entering into the non-orthodox practice of modalism--attributing one act or a particular act of God's self-giving to just one Person of the Trinity: for example--Creator, Redeemer, Perfecter, etc.

I think I have transcended that challenge in my wording, but I will certainly trust that you will judge that for yourself.

If you choose to use any of the language that I share, a simple acknowledgement would be appreciated [*by Gary L. Lake Dillensnyder, OSL+].

So, here is what I have to share:

The Blessed, Almighty and Eternal Trinity:
    God—Source, Word and Spirit…
    God—Mother, Wisdom, Comforter…
    God—Power, Light, Wisdom…
    God—Creator, Preserver, Comforter…
God—Dear One, One Endeared, One Endearing…
God—our Mother and Father, our Sister and Brother, our Friend and Neighbor…
Loving God, God of love, Beloved presence of God…
God—who was, who is, who is to be…
    God—Creator, Redeemer, Advocate…
    God—Creator, Reconciler, Comforter…
    God our Maker, Lover, Keeper…
God of heaven, God of earth, God the go-between…
God—Bearer of Creation, Lover of Creation, Guardian of Creation…
God of the music, God of the prose, God of the dance…
    God—Trusting Gift, Expectant Hope, Patient-Watcher Awaiting…
God of yes, God of no, God of maybe…
God of Light in darkness, God of Radiance in splendor, God of Truth in hues of gray…
God hidden in plain sight, God ordinary in exuberance, God known in glory…
God the Lover, God the Beloved, God the Love between the two…
God—the Alpha, the Omega, and everything in-between…
    God—when, why, and how…
God—the Creator, the Begotten, the Beholder…

World without end:
…already, yet to be, now becoming.
    …always, all ways, forevermore.
…both now and in the age of ages.
…yesterday, today, and in each tomorrow.
…through history, through eternity, in everything.
    …promise, fulfilled, fulfilling.
    …end, beginning, here and now.

Who lives and reigns:
…through the Blessed and Holy Trinity, who dwells in glory everlasting.
…through the Blessed and Holy Trinity, who reigns in glory everlasting.
…through the Blessed and Holy Trinity, Sovereign One in glory everlasting.
…through the Blessed and Holy Trinity, Glorious One in sovereignty everlasting.
…through God, in God, with God, Blessed and Holy Trinity, now and forevermore.
…through Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God now and forevermore.
…through the Only-Begotten-One, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, One God now and forevermore.
…through Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, in glory everlasting.
…through the Only-Begotten-One, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, in glory everlasting.
…through Christ, in Christ, with Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forevermore.
…through, with, and in the Only-Begotten-One, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty God, now and forevermore.
…through Christ, in Christ, with Christ, all honor and glory is yours, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forevermore.
…through, with, and in the Only-Begotten-One, all honor and glory is yours, blessed and holy Trinity, now and forevermore.

Lord, have mercy:
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy Eternal One: have mercy on us.
Holy God, holy and mighty, holy Immortal One, have mercy on us.
God of all compassion: have mercy on us.
God of all love: belove us. God of all justice: redeem us. God of all peace: reconcile us.
God, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Holy Spirit, have mercy.
God, have mercy on us. Christ, grant us your forgiveness. Holy Spirit, empower us to do God’s will.
Creating God, create us anew. Redeeming Christ, bring us to new life. Sanctifying Spirit, make us holy.
God our Source: center us in your presence. Word of God: teach us your ways. Spirit of God: set our hearts aflame.
O God, Author of Life: have mercy on us and keep us in your life. O God, Redeemer of Life: have mercy on us and keep us in your reconciling work. O God, Preserver of Life: have mercy on us and keep us in your provident love.
All just peace, now and always, all ways, for ever more...
