FOR A DULL WINTER DAY

Scripture

Rejoice in the Holy God, Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One, always!
I say it again: Rejoice!
Let everyone see your forbearing spirit.
The Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One is near.
Dismiss all anxiety from your minds;
instead, present your needs to God through prayer and petition,
giving thanks for all circumstances.
Then God’s own peace, which is beyond all understanding,
will stand guard over your hearts and minds in
the Beloved, Begotten, Anointed One.
Finally, my sisters and brothers,
your thoughts should be wholly directed to all that is true,
all that deserves respect, all that is honest, pure, decent,
admirable, virtuous or worthy of praise.
Live according to what you have learned and accepted,
what you have heard me say and seen me do.
Then will the God of peace be with you.
(Philippians 4.4-9, adapted for inclusive language)

Prayer For Days As These

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One,
somedays the shadows seem larger and thicker
than your unextinguishable light.
They loom over us like a shroud of weight--
heavy, shouldered burden, back breaking weight.
With our journey being so often uphill,
the challange only seem more improbable.
O God, to whom nothing is impossible,
with whom there is always possibility,
have mercy on us and be with us as the gentle
comfort that strengthens and heals.
You are always, and forever, our reason to rejoice.
Why, then, does the despair feel so deep?
Why, is it, that the gloom presses so cumbersome?
Our heart of hearts scream silent in the night.
Our words fall as failed pining that goes forth only
as an echo that fades before being heard.
Still, it is your Word alone, O God, that creates,
redeems, and renews all life.
Open the ears of our soul to your voice.
Speak, O Loving One, in words that we are able
to hear and understand.
May your presence speak of peace and wellness.
We await. We await in kindled hope. We await for
You to come to our aid.
Make haste, O God. Come, speedily to our longing.
Once again, may we know, without doubt,
that Blessed are You and Blessed is your Kin-Dom
forevermore.
