PRAYER AT NIGHT

EVENING PRAYER

Opening Words

O Word of God, open my lips;
and my mouth will proclaim your praise.
Praise be to God̶̶—Holy, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One.
God's most holy Name be praised.

O God, make speed to save us.
Make haste to help us, O God.

Centering Sentences

Let my prayer be set forth in your sight as incense, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. Psalm 141:2

Yours is the day, O God, yours also the night; you established the moon and the sun. You fixed all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter. Psalm 74:15,16

I will bless God who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set God always before me; because God is at my right hand, I shall not fall. Psalm 16:7,8

If I say, 'Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,' darkness is not dark to you, O God; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139:10,11

Psalmody For Night

Psalm 4
Answer me when I call, God of my justice!
Give me relief from my distress!
Have mercy!
Hear my prayer! How long will you people dishonor me before God?
How long will you love delusion and pursue lies?
Know that those who love YHWH
have been set apart by divine will—
YHWH will hear me when I call!
Tremble, and stop your sinning;
search your heart,
alone and silent in your room.
Offer sacrifices of justice,
and put your trust in YHWH.
So many are asking,
“Does good even exist anymore?”
Let the light of your face, YHWH, shine on us!
You put joy in my heart—
a joy greater than being full
of bread and new wine.
In peace I’ll lie down;
in peace I will sleep:
for you alone, YHWH,
keep me perfectly safe.

Psalm 141
I call out to you, YHWH! Come quickly!
Hear my voice when I call to you. 2 My prayers rise like incense before you,
my hands rise to heaven
like smoke from the evening sacrifice. 3 YHWH, set a guard at my mouth
and keep watch at the gate of my lips— 4 don’t let my heart be seduced by evil
or by the lure of easy corruption
in the company of evildoers!
Don’t let me sample their delights! 5 Let the upright strike me in reproof
for my own good,
but never let me allow the corrupt

Psalm 134
Come and bless YHWH,
all you who serve YHWH,
ministering by night in God’s house!
Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
and bless YHWH!
May you be blessed from Zion
by the One who made heaven and earth!

Psalm 27
YHWH, you are my light, my salvation—
whom will I fear?
You are the fortress of my life—
of whom will I be afraid?
When my enemies attack me,
spreading vicious lies about me
wherever they go,
they, my adversaries and foes,
will stumble and fall.
Though an army mounts a siege against me,
my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
I’ll still be confident.
One thing I ask of you, YHWH,
one thing I seek:
that I may dwell in your house all the days of my life,
to gaze on your beauty
and to meditate in your Temple.
ou will keep me safe in your shelter
when trouble arises,
you will hide me
under the cover of your Tabernacle—
you’ll set me on a rock,
high and out of reach.
Then I’ll be able to hold my head up,
even with my enemies surrounding me. I will offer in your Tabernacle
sacrifices of great joy—
I’ll sing and make music to you, YHWH!
Hear me when I call, YHWH!
Have mercy on me and answer me!
You say to my heart, “Seek my face,”
and so it is your face I seek!
Don’t hide your face from me;
don’t turn your faithful one away in anger.
Don’t reject me, don’t desert me,
O God of my salvation,
for you are my only help.
Even if my own parents reject me,
you, YHWH, will accept me.
Teach me your way, YHWH,
and lead me on a straight path because of my enemies.
Don’t surrender me to the will of my enemies;
for defamers rise up against me breathing violence.
Even so I have confidence
that I’ll see the goodness of YHWH
in the land of the living!
Wait for God—stand tall
and let your heart take courage!
Yes, wait for YHWH!

Reading

Deuteronomy 6:4-7
Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God is one Lord;
and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart,
and with all your soul, and with all your might.
And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart;
and you shall teach them diligently to your children,
and shall talk of them when you sit in your house,
and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Responsory

Into your hands, O God, I commend my spirit.
You have redeemed us, God of truth.
Glory be to you, O Trinity Divine--
Love, Loving, Loved,
now and forevermore.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time
with one accord to make our common supplication to you;
and you have promised through your Beloved and Anointed One
that when two or three are gathered together in your Name
you will be in the midst of them:
Fulfill now, O God, our desires and petitions as may be best for us;
granting us in this world knowledge of your truth,
and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

The Prayer of Jesus

Almighty and Most Merciful God,
hallowed be your Name.
May your realm come.
May your will be done,
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today the portion we need.
Forgive us our sins,
for we too forgive everyone who sins against us;
and don’t let us be subjected to the test,
but deliver us from evil.

For yours is the Dominion, the Power, and the Glory,
forever and ever, world without end.
Amen.

Canticle

Nunc Dimittis
Now, O Ever-Loving One, let your servant go in peace.
You have fulfilled your promise.
My own eyes have seen your salvation,
which you have prepared in the sight of all peoples.
A light to bring the Gentiles from darkness;
the glory of your people Israel.

Save us, O God, while we are awake;
protect us while we sleep;
that we may keep watch with Christ
and rest with him in peace.

Closing Words

The Holy, Holy and Almighty, Holy Immortal One
grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

Blessed is God
and blessed is the Kin-Dom
now and forevermore.
Amen.
