STARTING THE DAY

A Brief Time Of Prayer and Meditation

This is the day God has made.
I will rejoice and be glad in it.

O God. upon our lips,
and our mouth will declare your praise.

Blessed is God; God's name be blessed.
Be thankful unto God, and bless God's name.

O God, make haste to help us.
Make haste to save us, O God.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal:
In your compassion, have mercy on us.

Prayer

Eternal God, you are the light of the minds that know you,
the joy of the hearts that love you,
and the strength of the wills that serve you.
Grant us so to know you,
that we may truly love you, and so to love you
that we may fully serve you,
and to serve you is perfect freedom.
Kindle is us the passion to work for justice
and to always be seeking peace.
(adapted from St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo)

Almighty God,
in whom we live and move and have our being,
you have made us for yourself,
so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
Grant us purity of heart and strength of purpose,
so that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will,
no weakness from doing it.
Grant that in your light we may see light clearly,
and in your service find our perfect freedom.
In your most Holy and Blessed Name we pray.

(adapted from St. Augustine, Bishop of Hippo)

Scripture

O God, you will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are fixed on you;
for in returning and rest we shall be saved;
in quietness and trust shall be our strength.
(Isaiah 26:3; 30:15)

Meditation
  • Take a few moments to name in thought those things for which you are thankful.
  • Take a few moments to name in thought those things for which are a challenge.
  • Take a few moments to name in thought for those who are hurting.
  • Take a few moments to name in thought for those you love.
  • Take a few moments to reflect in thought for those who are affected by racism, gender-ism and sexism, ageism, disability, greed, dishonesty, and the lack of things needed for life in all its abundance and fulfillment.

Prayer

O God, the creator and preserver of all humankind,
we humbly seek your help for all sorts and
conditions of people everywhere;
that you would be pleased to make your ways known to them,
your saving health to all nations.
More especially we pray for your holy Church universal;
that it may be so guided and governed by your good Spirit,
that all who profess and call themselves Christians
may be led into the way of truth,
and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace,
and in righteousness of life.
Finally, we commend to your never ending goodness
all those who are in any ways afflicted or distressed,
be it in mind, body, or poverty;
that it may please You to comfort and relieve
them according to their several necessities,

giving them patience under their sufferings,
and a happy issue out of all their afflictions.
This we humbly ask in the Name of your Beloved and
Anointed One,
whom with You and the Holy Spriit,
lives and reigns in glory everlasting,
world without end.
Amen.
