CRUCIFORM

Wisdom of Solomon 9. 1-4, 9-10

God of our ancestors, God of mercy, you who made all things by your word, and in your wisdom gave mere mortals stewardship over all creation to care for the world in holiness and uprightness, and to administer justice with a pure heart: Give me Wisdom, who sits beside your Judgment seat, and do not reject me from those you call your own…Wisdom is beside you and knows all your ways and was present when you created the universe. She is aware of what is acceptable to you and what is in keeping with your Law. Send Her forth from your holy heavens, and dispatch Her from your glorious Judgment Seat to work at my side and teach me to do what is pleasing to you.

II Chronicles 1. 10-12

Solomon prayed: "Grant me the wisdom to know how I should come and go in their eyes—for how else can I lead this great people of yours?” YHWH said to Solomon, “Since you have not asked for wealth or for possessions; for honor or for the lives of your foes; nor even for a long life for yourself; since this is what is in your heart, I will grant it. Wisdom and understanding will be yours. And I will give you as well what you have not asked for—wealth, possessions and honor such as no ruler has had before you nor any that will come after you.”

CRUCIFORM

Proverbs 2. 1-11

My children, if you heartily accept my words, and treasure my requirements, incline your ear to Wisdom, and take her truth into your heart. For if you yearn for insight and cry out for understanding,  If you search for it as you would for silver, and dig for it as you would for buried treasure, you will understand what fear of YHWH is, and discover how to truly know God. For YHWH alone gives wisdom; from God’s mouth comes knowledge and understanding. The Most High stores up wisdom for the just, and shields those who walk in honor, for the Almighty guards the path of justice and watches over the way of the holy ones. Only then will you have an understanding of rightness, justice, and fairness—roads that lead to happiness. When Wisdom enters your heart and knowledge delights you, good judgment will protect you, and understanding will guard you.

CRUCIFORM

John 1. 1-5, 14

In the beginning there was the Word; the Word was in God’s presence, and the Word was God. The Word was present to God from the beginning. Through the Word all things came into being, and apart from the Word nothing came into being that has come into being. In the Word was life, and that life was humanity’s radiance—a God-Splendor that shines in the doom and gloom, a God-Magnificence that the shadows have never overtaken…And the Word became flesh and stayed for a little while among us; we saw the Word’s glory—the favor and position a parent gives an only child—filled with grace, filled with truth.

WEEKS IV

CRUCIFORM

I Corinthians 1. 18-25

The message of the cross is complete absurdity to those who are headed for ruin, but to us who are experiencing salvation, it is the power of God. Scripture says, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and thwart the learning of the learned.” Where are the wise? Where are the scholars? Where are the philosophers of this age? Has not God turned the wisdom of this world into folly? If it was God’s wisdom that the world in its wisdom would not know God, it was because God wanted to save those who have faith through the foolishness of the message we preach. For while the Jews call for miracles and the Greeks look for wisdom here we are preaching a Messiah nailed to a cross. To the Jews this is an obstacle they cannot get over, and to the Greeks it is madness--but to those who have been called, whether they are Jews or Greeks, Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

TRINITY

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One: Come!

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One: Come!

Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy Immortal One: Come!

INVITATORY

O Wisdom, you come forth from the mouth of the Most High and reach from beginning to end, mightily and sweetly ordering all things. Behold and bless your people everywhere. Be present in ordering the life of this and every community. Come and teach us the way of prudence.

CROSS

Eternal God, your Word of wisdom goes forth and does not return empty: Grant us such knowledge and love of you that we may perceive your presence in all creation and every creature; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, now and forever. Amen.
